Flyers - FLYING into June - Buddies, Timing, Towels and Notes

Hi Flyers Families,

Swimmers take your marks!  As cliché as this sounds, time is literally FLYING! Here are a few updates as we dive into the first week of June!

1. Swim Buddies – Adrienne is working hard to get buddies set before the Last Day of School Pool Bash! If there are any changes please let her know at [email protected]. Note, Goldfish will not initially have buddies assigned, as they do not initially swim at meets. That said, we have kiddos who are more than willing to be a buddy to them once they swim at a meet.

2. TimeDrops Working Group – I have a group that I believe will be key to ensuring our home meets run smoothly, that said if you are interested in joining this group please let me know. Requirements are technical aptitude and willingness to make things work.

3. Perosnalized Flyer Towel Order - we made it 40+ towels!  Evie will be in touch regarding payment.

4. Parent Meeting Notes – apologies I had intended on sharing these much sooner.

2026 Flyers Parents Meeting

Head Coach Update – Coach Dillon

Season at a glance

  • Practices are in the afternoon until June 10. They will switch on June 11th after that.
  • Once we are in the mornings meets are every Monday unless there is poor weather
  • Whenever something is cancelled, we will send an alert and an email letting everyone know beforehand.

Practices

  • Afternoons
    • 13&up: 4:15-5:00
    • 9-12: 5:00-5:45
    • 8&under and Goldfish: 5:45-6:15
  • Mornings
    • 9-12: 8:00-9:00
    • 8&under and Goldfish: 9:00-9:45
    • 13&up: 9:45-10:45
    • 7:00-8:00: Camp kids (only Wednesday & Thursday)
  • During practice we ask if you stay to watch please stay in your seat or away from the side of the pool to ensure that the coaches can focus on your child’s progression.
  • Also please try to talk with the coaches before and after the practice, not during. We want full attention of the pool and if we are having a conversation, we might get distracted

Team Goals

  • No DQ’s at champs
  • All the goldfish get moved to the lanes
  • Have more than 55% of the team get to champs
  • Undefeated regular season
  • Win champs!!!!!

Meets (6 in total)

  • When signing up for meets if the athlete is not declared by the Friday before the meet they will be considered not attending
  • You can go in and declare your athlete each week or you can declare them all at once
  • Try to get your swimmers to the pools for the meets early
  • oMeets are chaotic and warmups time is very valuable so please try to get them to the pool so they can get in on time
  • When it comes to seating the athletes will be on deck and the parent will set up outside to sit. There will be a way to come in and watch but the deck gets crowded very quickly.
  • Sportsmanship is a huge part of being a flyer
  • Explain Summer awards and Champs
  • This year anyone can score from any heat and there may be mixed relays.

Safety

  • Safety is out #1 concern when coaching
  • Our eyes need to be on the pool as much as possible
  • When there are weather issues we will make the call however if you hear thunder while on the playground please come to us as sometimes we can’t hear it on the pool deck.
  • When it comes to making calls before the practice starts please be on the lookout and if you do not hear anything that means that practice is still on.

Communication

  • All my contact information is on the website so if you have an urgent question or concern please email me or text me and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
  • If your child gets sick before the meet and you declared them as attending try to let me know before the meet starts. It is important for meets to know who is at the meet so that we aren’t dragging the meet out longer trying to find a swimmer because they aren’t on the blocks.
  • Other coaches also have their contacts on the website if you cannot reach me for some reason.

Parent Updates

Things I forgot:

Volunteering:

  • All are expected to volunteer. If you can’t fulfill your volunteer commitment option to fine. That said, there are many opportunities, not just at meets, to volunteer.
  • We need someone to run the end of season party still.
  • Spots open at meets as well.

Scoring at Meets – VPSU Rule Change:

  • Scoring done off time, not first heat only. Top swimmers from each team will score regardless of heat. As such no longer will have sweeps for meets.
  • All D1 VPSU teams are using a new timing system, TimeDrops. Eliminates need for runners, scoring completed faster and more efficiently.

Leadership Change:

  • Communications Coordinator – Heather Powell has taken this on and is already making great content for our team.
  • Will be Lisa’s last year as President. Asked for volunteers now to step up and learn the ropes. No longer must be a First Colony resident.  Those interested please let me know!

End of School Bash: Wednesday, June 10th from 4pm – 8pm at the pool, fun games, food and more! All welcome!
